The intriguing anti-hero storyline, combined with Schwab’s clever, layered storytelling, makes ‘Vicious’ truly deserving of its hype.

It’s easy to see why this book was so highly recommended, and I’m glad I finally decided to read it! Within moments, I was hooked by the contrast between Victor’s past and present, as well as the fascinating ExtraOrdinary concept. As the pieces gradually fell into place, shifts in time and perspective built tension and added depth to key characters through their backstories, motives, and arcs. Sure, a few moments felt convenient, but that didn’t affect how much I enjoyed the story.
The character dynamics were definitely the highlight for me. The tangled mix of rivalry, obsession, betrayal, and loyalty makes the story compelling and strengthens its moral themes. I particularly loved the found family dynamic, as each character brings their own unique strengths and quirks to the group. I can’t wait to see what these characters get up to in the sequel!

Discussion Questions (Contains spoilers!):
Q: Do you have any similar book recommendations?
For a similar fantasy with a gritty, revenge-driven storyline and morally grey characters, I recommend Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. It also has a great mismatched crew whose banter and loyalty give the story heart. For something slightly different, check out A Serial Killer’s Guide to Marriage by Asia Mackay. It’s a twisted domestic thriller with morally grey characters clashing.
Q: Which character was your favourite?
Sydney, hands down. Her tragic backstory and growth from a lonely, innocent character to finding her place in Victor’s group, add depth to her character and make her easy to root for. She also serves as a nice contrast to Victor’s cold, vicious nature.
Q: Do you like having picnics?
Yes! I haven’t had one in ages, but I love a summer picnic. There’s just something great about soaking up the warm sun and enjoying nice food with great company. A picnic on a frozen lake, like Sydney and Serena’s, sounds like a fun idea in theory, but I’m pretty sure I’d be too cold to enjoy it.
