Final Rating:

Cover:

2.5/5

Though the simple design incorporates a few elements from the story, nothing about it is striking or intriguing. It is simply abstract and far too plain for the enticing tale it is supposed to represent.

Writing:

4.5/5

The beautiful writing style is vivid and gently drew me in. There are numerous quotable lines, and these kept my attention on the unfolding story. Transitions between current and past events are also perfectly timed without disrupting the hypnotic flow of the story.

There is a defiance in being a dreamer

Storyline:

4/5

The story begins with a gradual, unhurried detailing of Addie’s childhood and current situation. Not only is the pace slow, but there is a constant stream of inner monologues and no apparent conflict to resolve. This made it difficult for me to initially enjoy the story. It was not until I embraced the lush writing and atypical characters that I became invested in the evolving storyline. Various twists and revelations kept the story entertaining, and I also enjoyed the themes of loneliness and identity echoed throughout.

Main character:

3/5

Addie LaRue is a well-defined and complex character who eventually grew on me. She may not have made the best first impression as her character looks down on other women in order to seem different and fiercely independent. However, the complexity of her character is slowly revealed as we discover more about her struggles and past. Her experiences may not be completely relatable, but I loved her drive to make the most of all that is thrown her way.

everyone wants to be remembered

Secondary characters:

4/5

For a story spanning such a long period, there are (thankfully!) only a handful of secondary characters. The focus is mainly on the love interests, both of whom are given clear backstories and personalities. This allowed me to slowly understand and like them both. The remaining characters merely pop in and out of Addie’s life without much impact.

Romance:

3/5

Addie’s connection with both romantic leads seemed purely based on convenience. They both satisfy Addie’s need to escape her eternal loneliness while she meets a similar desire in their lives. Without this dependency, there is not much else to Addie’s connection with either of the characters. However, the love/hate dance was entertaining.

Despite the slow start, ‘The invisible Life of Addie LaRue‘ soon commanded my attention through the captivating characters and writing style. The storyline is rich and filled with serval twists that seamlessly tie the story together. I would recommend She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan for those who enjoyed this story.
