SIX OF CROWS by Leigh Bardugo

SIX OF CROWS

Final Rating:

5/5

Date of Completion: 12/07/2022

Cover:

4/5

Even with the illustration of a crow taking up half the space, this design is oddly stunning! The buildings concealed within the crow’s feathers make it even more fascinating.

Writing:

5/5

Despite being relatively simple, the world-building is fascinating and immersive. Similarly simple is the writing style, but this is perfect for conveying the intricate details of the action-packed story. The multiple points of view (POVs) used not only presents a full scope of events but help establish the complex characters. Transitions between these POVs are smooth and well-timed, with little repetition of information.

Greed may do your bidding, but death serves no man.

Storyline:

4/5

Fast-paced and action-packed, the storyline is gripping from the first chapter. The action scenes and elaborate heist were unpredictable, with numerous surprises and omission of information until required. While there are moments where the pace slows, these are skillfully used to develop the characters. Serious topics such as human trafficking and PTSD are also explored, adding more depth to the storyline.

Main character:

5/5

The infamous crew who set out to do the impossible are the best part of this story. Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Nina, Matthias and Wylan – each character brings a different skill and possesses a distinct personality, backstory and struggle. They may all have flaws and make some poor decisions, but they also have features that make it easy to like and root for them. The only thing I could not wrap my mind around was the age of these characters – they all seemed older than teenagers!

Secondary characters:

4/5

With six main characters, I was very grateful that there were only a few notable secondary characters. These characters provide several villains to resent and help add depth to the main characters.

Romance:

5/5

The delightful, slow-burning attractions between the characters are flawlessly woven into the story. Their subtle actions, emotions and bickering seemed realistic and adorable.

The heart is an arrow. It demands aim to land true.

Once again, ‘Six of Crows‘ has proven to be one of the best fantasy heist stories I have read. It is action-packed with a fascinating world and exceptional characters. The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi is another fantasy heist story, perfect for those who love this book.
