The opening lines effortlessly captured my attention and set the tone for the entire story. I soon found myself engaged and invested in the story because of the subtle humour and clever use of cliffhangers at the end of most chapters. I also enjoyed the multiple points of view as each had a distinct and realistic voice.

THE BLACK KIDS by Christina Hammonds Reed
There is no denying that the writing in this book is choppy and unfocused. Between the numerous tangents and rapid changes from past to current events, I initially found this writing style jarring. However, as the story progressed, I realised that the informal, conversational tone created is actually very fitting for the story.

GOOD GIRL, BAD BLOOD by Holly Jackson
Pippa Fitz-Amobi is on the case again in this fantastic sequel! ‘Good girl, bad blood’ begins soon after the events in the previous book. These events are creatively recapped using the various media elements I now associate with this series. Much to my delight, new media elements like the AGGGTM podcast and online articles are even introduced in this book.

MISTBORN: THE FINAL EMPIRE by Brandon Sanderson
I had been told that the correct way to start Brandon Sanderson’s works is with the Mistborn series. As the first book in the original trilogy, ‘Mistborn: The Final Empire’ is an epic tale deserving of the hype that surrounds this series.

RAYBEARER by Jordan Ifueko
‘Raybearer’ is a book I knew I would like right after hearing the author’s dedication: “For the kid scanning fairy tales for a hero with a face like theirs. And for the girls whose stories we compressed into pities and wonders, triumphs and cautions, without asking, even once, for their names.”

SIX CRIMSON CRANES by Elizabeth Lim
Despite the hype that surrounds it, ‘Six Crimson Cranes’ was not high on my list of books to read. The mediocre blurb failed to entice me with its offer of a light-hearted and fluffy, Young Adult (YA) read. It was not until I came across its beautiful cover at the bookstore that I was drawn to this book.
It was love at first sight! The elegant font, simple illustration and soft, pastel colours grabbing my attention and demanding that I read this book.
RELATIONSHIP GOALS: HOW TO WIN AT DATING, MARRIAGE, AND SEX by Michael Todd
As someone who was first introduced to Michael Todd through his ‘Relationship Goals’ sermon series, I was really excited when ‘Relationship Goals’ the book was announced. I knew I had to get my hands on the book to revisit the contents of the series.
