To anyone expecting a close retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, this book is not that. ‘These violent delights’ is a loose, loooooose, l-o-o-s-e (have I said LOOSE?) homage to the tale of Romeo and Juliet. Nevertheless, it is a refreshing blend of romance, mystery, history AND fantasy.

GIRL, WOMAN, OTHER by Bernardine Evaristo
‘Girl, Woman, Other’ is a much-needed tribute to the lives and struggles of black women in Britain. Themes such as feminism and diversity are expertly presented through the depiction of women from different backgrounds, careers, ages, and sexuality.

SUCH A FUN AGE by Kiley Reid
‘Such a Fun Age’ is an entertaining read that starts with a bang! Readers are quickly presented with an unpleasant scene that serves to capture our attention and set the scene for the rest of the book. Throw in Kiley Reid’s simple yet picturesque writing style, and, unsurprisingly, I was enthralled after reading a few chapters.

THE ALCHEMIST by Paulo Coelho
‘The Alchemist’ is a book I would recommend all young adults read whilst transitioning to becoming full-fledged “adults”. I would also recommend it to anyone going through a mid, quarter, or any stage, life crisis as it might help with finding your place in the world.

THE SILVERED SERPENTS by Roshani Chokshi
Well played Roshani, well played…
‘The Silvered Serpents’ picks up months after the events of the previous book. Our band of jolly thieves are not quite as jolly as they struggle to protect their battered hearts and make the most of what life has dealt their way.

Simply Esther’s MY SISTER THE SERIAL KILLER by Oyinkan Braithwaite
I must start this review off by congratulating Oyinkan Braithwaite for the immense success she has achieved on her debut novel. Reminiscent of Chimamanda’s ‘Americanah’ in how it made me feel, the telling of black stories that go beyond the typical narrative is always so refreshing especially as an African in diaspora and this novel is no exception. I clearly remember sending my sister a screenshot of the cover and knowing that, I HAD TO READ THIS!

Just JJ’s MY SISTER, THE SERIAL KILLER by Oyinkan Braithwaite
This book captures the dysfunctional relationship a nurse (Korede) has with her younger sister (Ayoola) who is a serial killer. Now, although this sounds fairly dark and unsettling, Korede’s morbidly funny narrative makes this book surprising entertaining. In fact, the satirical nature of her narrative completely changes the tone of the book from a thriller into an amusing beach read.

MEXICAN GOTHIC by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
I cannot talk about this book without first mentioning the absolutely BEAU-TI-FUL cover that adorns it! I am not ashamed to say that this book was definitely one that I judged by its cover. Seriously, on the computer this cover looks really pretty and easy on the eye, but it is even better in real life! I may or may not have spent the first five minutes after I this book arrived, stroking and staring at the cover. If you have never done this to a book, then you are just weird!
