Cover:

3/5

The summer vibes given through the bright, pastel colours are terrific! The design concept might be simple, but it works well and looks great.

Writing:

4/5

Vivid and easy to follow, I cannot find any faults with the writing style. Not only does Emily Henry create an adorable setting with Sunshine Falls, but her ability to capture feelings and actions with words brings her characters to life. I did not even mind that we only get Nora’s point of view as it is so well done that it felt like we also get Charlie’s perspective.

Sometimes, even when you start with the last page and you think you know everything, a book finds a way to surprise you

Storyline:

3/5

The first thing that struck me about the storyline was how realistic it was. This was mainly achieved through the compelling main characters and their personal struggles. These struggles are very heart-warming and skilfully used to explore deeper topics surrounding family. They also allow the characters to experience so much growth and development during the story. However, as heart-warming as the storyline is, it took a while for me to get into it. I found the pace too slow, and, as a lover of fantasy books, I found the storyline too mundane. I also did not care much for Nora’s relationship with her sister and only warmed up to Libby towards the end.

Main character:

4/5

Both Nora and Charlie are book lovers, which is reason enough to like them. Their intelligence, wit and love for their family make them even more relatable and easy to connect with. Despite these similarities, Nora and Charlie have several differences that seem to be steeped in their complex backstories. While these differences initially lead to a rough first meeting, it gradually becomes clear that they are also why Nora and Charlie are such a great match.

Secondary characters:

2/5

The only secondary character to make a strong impression on me was Libby. While I could not stand her character for most of the story, she had grown on me a little by the end. I also understand that the information about her is biased, as it comes from Nora’s point of view.

I doubt I will ever like anyone else in the world as much as I like you

Romance:

4/5

With the intense chemistry and strong banter between Nora and Charlie, it did not take me long to start rooting for them. Their interactions always put a smile on my face, and I loved that they loved making each other laugh. I also liked that the slow-burn romance was driven by vulnerable conversations rather than physical attraction alone. This made it easy to understand why they were falling for each other without forcing the relationship.

In essence, ‘Book Lovers‘ is an easy, light-hearted romance that still manages to explore some deep topics surrounding family and identity. Nora and Charlie are complex characters that are easy to connect with, and I loved that their slow-burn romance is shown, not just told. However, I found the slow pace and mundane storyline a little boring. Those who like this story may also like The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary.
