Despite the simplicity of the design, it is still stunning and intriguing! I especially love the creativity with the last letter of the title.

Writing:

4/5

I could not get enough of the dark, satirical humour infused into the narrative. Even though I was not laughing out loud, the shade and snark provided a constant stream of entertainment.

Why waste time on people who offer no value

Storyline:

3/5

The storyline generally switched between Grace’s murdering spree, childhood and current life in prison. This means that there is a lot of jumping around, and the storyline is slightly disjointed. The repetitive structure of each murder also became somewhat tedious, and there are a few unrealistic aspects. However, I was still entertained and engaged throughout. There are even a few themes for readers to consider, although these are not explored in much depth. The big twist towards the end of the story was also fantastic, as I did not see it coming!

Main character:

3/5

Grace was a fascinating main character, and it was thrilling to see the world from her perspective. Her unpredictable, satirical narrative certainly kept me on my toes and added complexity to her character. The gradual revelations about her past also helped define her character and personality.

You cannot keep an overly privileged white girl down

Secondary characters:

3/5

It was difficult to like or root for any of these secondary characters. Still, each character is given enough depth and individuality to be distinct and realistic.

All things considered, ‘How to Kill Your Family‘ has a decent storyline, but, the fascinating main character was the highlight for me. There are no “good guys” or a “happy ending,” so the story does feel slightly unsatisfying, but it was still fun to read. A similar book would be My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite.
