Cover:

3/5

With the blood bag stocking, this cover neatly alludes to medical and festive content in the book. However, it is still painfully simple and unremarkable.

Writing:

4/5

The dry humour I loved in This is Going to Hurt is once again woven into the anecdotes in this book, though some punchlines fall flat. The cleverly written stories also have just enough details and context to make them clear and easy to follow.

Who’s that you can see in his suit of magenta? It’s me – I’ve been soaked head to toe in placenta

Stop sticking root vegetables, remote controls, chocolate wrappers, fairy lights – or indeed anything else that’s irretrievable and inanimate (or, god help us, animate) – up your interval cavities for one day a year

Content:

4/5

Adam Kay shares even more stories about his experience as a junior doctor, focusing on the shenanigans and struggles that come with the festive season. Sad, frustrating tales were skilfully paired with comical and heartwarming moments, making the short book engaging and meaningful.

Narration & Audio:

5/5

Adam Kay narrates this himself and perfectly delivers the vocal range needed for his words.

The job still gives a lot back, despite all it takes from you

A lot of the reward for this job comes in the form of a warm glow. It doesn’t make you look any less tired, you can’t pay the rent with it, and it’s worth a lot less than the social life you’ve traded it for, but this comforting aura of goodness and purpose definitely throws light into some dark corners and helps you withstand a lot of the shit.

All in all, ‘Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas’ was a quick read that was as entertaining and raw as This is Going to Hurt. While it was not long enough to be as impactful, this book still contained a great message.
