Despite an interesting opening, the first third of this book nearly dragged me into a reading slump. Even with Sanderson’s creativity and exceptional writing, I struggled to engage with the slow, character‑driven storyline. It was only as the lush worldbuilding, sprawling cast, and tangled politics began to take shape that I found myself increasingly invested. The sharp wit woven into the characters’ interactions also stood out to me, along with the weighty themes like guilt, power, and morality that give their struggles real weight. What’s more, the ending twists were fantastic, tying together the major plot threads and setting the stage for the rest of the series.
