MAY 2021 Monthly Spotlight

May 2021 monthly spotlight featured image

May. The month in which we all feel summer should be here already; yet the weather constantly dismisses our feelings and reminds us, that we live in England.

The erratic shifts between heavy rainfall and dazzling sunshine that characterises May can be rather annoying for those looking to spend time outdoors. Never fear! Here are some new releases that will bring that Summer energy right to your doorstep.

Our top pick:

Arsenic and Adobo

Title: Arsenic and Adobo

Author: Mia P. Manansala

Genre: Mystery; Thriller

First impressions: The mention of ‘nosy’ ‘matchmaking’ aunties has us triggered!

Lila Macapagal is tasked with saving her aunty’s failing restaurant but things go from bad to worse when her ex, who also happens to be the food critic, is found dead. Unhappy with being treated as the one and only suspect by the police, Lila takes things into her own hands to clear her name. Soon, her name is not the only thing in danger as her neck may be on the chopping black.

Just JJ’s top pick:

Title: Realm Breaker

Author: Victoria Aveyard

Genre: Fantasy

First impression: A high fantasy book with morally grey and diverse characters = One heck of an adventure!

As a strange darkness grows in Allward, Corayne feels it all the way in her small town by the sea. With this comes the discovery that she is the last of an ancient lineage. Accompanied by her miscellaneous troop: A squire, an immortal, an assassin, a sorceress, a forger and a bounty hunter; she is the last hope to save the world from destruction.

Six Weeks to Live

Title: Six Weeks to Live

First impression: This is giving major Munchausen by proxy vibes! (i.e. when the caregiver is the one making someone ill)

A routine doctor’s appointment turns Jennifer Barnes’s life upside down as she discovers she has a terminal brain tumour and only six weeks to live. As if that is not enough to deal with, she soon realises that she has possibly been poisoned a year earlier. Did someone try to get rid of her? Who might it have been?
