While I have not read all Cassandra Clare’s books on the Shadowhunters world, I remember reading a few books from The Mortal Instruments series when I was in secondary school. For me, reading this book was a way to reconnect with my younger self to see if what I enjoy reading has changed.
I found this book to be pure YA, fantasy epicness! Cassandra Clare did what she does best and she did not disappoint.
“The point of stories is not that they are objectively true, but that the soul of the story is truer than reality.”
Right from the start we are thrown into an action scene that does a great job of introducing us to some of the key characters. We are also made aware of secrets and information unknown to other characters right from the beginning and this increases throughout the book. Although this does became rather frustrating (in a good way), it also makes the book very engaging.
Both the plot and the characters were just so well thought out that I struggled to put this book down. Despite there being so many prominent characters, each one stood out in their own unique way. I loved that Cassandra gave multiple point of views as it really helped me empathise and connect with the characters. However, I am not great with learning new names, so I did find some of the supporting characters a little confusing.
Out of all the characters, Cordelia was by far my favourite. She came off as a fierce and strong female character who truly seemed unaware of just how awesome she was.
“Would you like to be a muse? “No,” said Cordelia. “I would like to be a hero.”
I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series!
