Now I understand why the blurb of this book is so vague and enigmatic – It thrives on mystery and twists. Knowing or guessing just one of the many twists could ruin the whole story.
Even when I’m not there, I’m always with you.
Greer and Sarah expertly weave a web of half-truths which lead readers to interpret the storyline inaccurately. Although this made the beginning of the book a little slow, I did not mind as it soon became obvious that the writers were setting the scene for something much bigger.
The first big twist occurred just as I started losing interest in the book. It was so unexpected it felt like a glass of cold water to the face. I had to go back and re-read sections of previous chapters to understand how I could have been so utterly wrong.
The second big twist was like a slap in the face. I was shocked, intrigued, but mainly confused. Once again I had to go trifling through previous chapters for any clues that the storyline was more than I had thought it to be.
We all layer them over our remembrances; the filters through which we want to see our lives.
These two main twists were really well timed. Right before each one, I got a little bored and indifferent as I truly believed that I had the storyline all figured out. However, while these twists really stood out for me, they only managed to pique my interest for a few moments.
This was mainly because the core storyline (without the many twists and mystery) is not very original and the main characters are not memorable. By incorporating clichés like the alcoholic female lead, I feel that the authors took the easy way out after setting up such interesting plot events.
Despite this, I would definitely recommend this book if you are looking for an easy read with lots of unexpected twists. Personally, I think this book could have been much better if the core storyline was stronger, hence the 3.5 stars.
