Attention ladies and gents! It is my utter pleasure to detail my thoughts on this impressive novel called ‘The Murder on the links‘. This mystery masterpiece, written by the Queen of Crime herself, is clearly well thought out and skillfully executed.
I had learned, with Poirot, that the less dangerous he looked, the more dangerous he was
Right from the start, Agatha Christie had me wrapped around her little finger with a most peculiar, but entertaining scene. My interest was then firmly ensnared by the numerous twists and turns embedded throughout the tale. Even with my initial intentions to remain logical and think critically, I fell prey to virtually every new rationale that sufficed. Each twist served only to baffle me and heighten my interest in how the mystery would eventually be concluded.
What’s more, this novel is bursting with petty retorts and competitions that make things far more entertaining. Honestly, with all that shade being thrown, I’m surprised no one froze to death!
Alas, my interest in this novel waned substantially during the second half as only a few new clues were revealed. Poirot and Hastings primarily spend their time examining all existing clues and their possible significance. New theories are proposed, challenged, and then dismissed time and time again.
Furthermore, Hastings and his instant love for beautiful women became rather exasperating. In fact, one would easily think that Hastings is a young teenager interacting with women for the first time and not a grown-ass man!
time is counted, not by hours, but by heartbeats
To conclude, Agatha Christie did what she does best by presenting us with an intricate mystery to mull over. This novel was certainly fun to read, but I was not completely engrossed throughout, hence, the 3.5 stars.
