Despite an intriguing start and atmospheric setting, I struggled to stay invested in ‘The Midnight Feast.’

Cover:

3/5

This vibrant orange cover certainly stands out and portrays a central aspect of the story with the fire illustration. However, the design is too simple for my liking, and I prefer the American cover.

Writing:

5/5

The casual, easy-to-follow writing style suits the characters and narrative well. Vivid descriptions also set a creepy, atmospheric tone throughout and effortlessly brought the story to life.

Sometimes doing the things that scare us is how we conquer those fears.

Storyline:

3/5

The story takes its time establishing key characters and setting the stage for the reveals towards the end. However, the slow pace quickly became tedious, as the multiple perspectives and timelines did not effectively build tension, and the theme of classism was not deeply explored. Still, the story does have some great twists as the mystery unravels, leading to a strong ending.

Main character(s):

3/5

Bella, Eddie, Francesca, and Owen seemed like well-defined and distinct characters. However, I struggled to care about them because their motives and actions were cloaked in mystery for most of the story, and they experienced little development.

Self-love is the first step toward loving others.

Secondary characters:

3/5

A relatively small cast of secondary characters helped drive parts of this story, but their actions were mainly behind the scenes, and they failed to make a strong impression on me.

Narration & Audio:

5/5

Roly Botha, Laurence Dobiesz, Joe Eyre, Tuppence Middleton, and Sarah Slimani gave exceptional performances with natural and well-paced delivery. The different narrators also made the various transitions smooth and easy to follow.
