I love this illustration of Wax and Wayne as it captures their unique traits and is linked to the shield and sword in the story. The blue mists also nicely depict an aspect of the world and tie in well with the previous covers in this series.
Writing:
5/5
I was immediately drawn in by the wit and vivid details woven into the smooth, easy-to-follow writing style. The intricate politics, creative magic applications, and remarkable new powers revealed throughout the story were another highlight that brilliantly expanded the world-building. I also loved the nods to characters and events from the original Mistborn trilogy, even though the reappearance of a certain character left me with mixed feelings.
People suffered when the truth became a commodity to be speculated upon.
Storyline:
5/5
The prologue was both hilarious and endearing, setting the stage for Wayne’s significant character development in this story. Things then pick up six years after previous events, and changes to the characters and world are presented as past mysteries resurface. The storyline flawlessly blends action, mystery, and politics as key characters race to block deadly plots which have been years in the making. With several twists and revelations keeping the story gripping, it builds to a bittersweet ending that beautifully wraps up the series while leaving room for future adventures.
Main character(s):
5/5
Even though Wayne, Wax, and Marasi are apart for most of the story, their individual struggles and journeys of self-discovery kept me fully invested in their characters. However, Wayne once again shines most in this story not just because of his hilarious personality but because his deeper backstory and substantial personal growth were touching.
Secondary characters:
4/5
Steris’s growth in self-confidence and self-worth made her character even more endearing. The new additions to her family also brought many cute moments, while the not-Wax and not-Wayne characters added an interesting dynamic. The remaining secondary characters did not stand out as much to me, but they were essential in driving the storyline and supporting the growth of the main characters.
Good intentions had to be coupled with a realistic look at the effects of your actions. It was entirely too easy to make things worse while trying to make them better.
Romance:
4/5
I absolutely adored the dynamics of Wax’s relationship in this story, and I found myself wanting even more cute moments between them. Marasi’s relationship also seemed sweet, although its development occurred during the six-year time jump and it is a tiny part of the story.
Narration & Audio:
5/5
There are only so many ways I can say Michael Kramer did an exceptional job narrating this series. His natural, emotive style and vocal effects really enhanced the listening experience, making it highly immersive.
