‘The Alloy of Law’ is an impressive pivot from the original Mistborn trilogy, and its light-hearted tone was addictively fun.

Cover:

4/5

This cover does a great job of portraying the atmosphere and key elements of the story. I especially love the blue mist and how it ties in with the designs for the original trilogy.

Writing:

5/5

Through vivid details and easy-to-grasp world-building, I was immediately drawn into the vibrant steampunk world that evolved following the original trilogy. Even the magic system was brilliantly transformed, and the action scenes were so well written that I found them easy to picture. I also loved the references and nods to the original trilogy throughout this story.

Even a good thing can become destructive if taken to excess.

Storyline:

5/5

The action-packed story opens with an intriguing prologue that introduces the main character, Waxillium, in action and immediately drew me in. I remained captivated throughout by the fast-paced mystery with several twists and turns, as well as the intricate setting and fun characters that were gradually established. Despite the relatively short length, the storyline builds to an explosive climax (literally!) and has a final twist that makes me eager to dive into the next book.

Main character(s):

4/5

I found Wax easy to like and root for, as his character has a nerdy, witty charm and a strong sense of responsibility and justice. His struggle with loss and his new duties as the head of a noble house also allowed for some character development and added depth to his character.

Secondary characters:

5/5

The banter and interactions between Wax, Wayne, and Marasi were golden moments that constantly left me smiling and laughing. Wayne and Marasi, like all other secondary characters, are also given distinct traits and roles, which made them stand out as they weaved in and out of the story. In particular, Wayne quickly became a favourite of mine because of his quirky way of looking at the world.

The measure of a person is not how much they have lived… It’s in how they make use of what life has shown them.

Romance:

4/5

While I am not usually a fan of the blushing damsel and age-gap romance tropes, the dynamic between the characters worked well, so I did not mind. I found myself eagerly waiting for more cute moments between them, and I cannot wait to see where their connection goes.

Narration & Audio:

5/5

Michael Kramer’s narration was terrific! His vocal variety, character voices, and accents truly brought the story to life.
