Here in the UK, the sound of fireworks going off can only mean one thing, the official countdown to the Christmas and end of year festivities have begun. Want to finish the year with a bang? Check out these books coming out this month that have us popping off with excitement:

Author: Chloe Gong

Genre: Fantasy; Historical Fiction

Our thoughts: With Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet ending with the death of the two lovers, we can’t help but wonder if the characters in this book will fare any better…

The blood feud between two rival gangs, forces 1920s Shanghai into a period of debauchery. At the centre of this are the young heirs to these gangs – Juliette Cai and Roma Montagov. When the city is invaded by a monster, they must put aside their grudges to stop the mayhem that ensues. This retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, is packed with a paranormal twist that promises a fresh, and fascinating take on the infamous classic.

Author: Liz Nugent

Genre: Thriller; Fiction

Our thoughts: You thought your family was messed up, wait till you meet this one…

Three brothers. One dead. Who? How? And why? With each brother having a reason to want the others dead, readers are taken back in time to observe the ‘little’ cruelties they endured and inflicted on each other during childhood. Bring on the dysfunction!

Title: The Awakening

Author: Nora Roberts

Genre: Fantasy; Romance

Our thoughts: The premise of this book brings to mind the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning and we are here for it!

The life of Breen Kelly is forever changed when she discovers an investment account from her long-lost father worth nearly four million dollars. With part of this money she sets off to Ireland where she soon unlocks a portal that takes her to a magical universe. We are talking faeries, mermaids, dragons – the whole shebang! But will Breen have the courage to face her new-found destiny?

Title: Instant Karma

Author: Marissa Meyer

Genre: Contemporary; Young Adult

Our thoughts: How cool would it be to have the ability to cast instant karma on those around you?!

When judgemental Prudence Daniels wakes up with the ability to do just that, she liberally uses her power to punish everyone. That is, everyone except Quint Erickson who somehow manages to make her powers backfire. What happens next is a series of fortunate events that create what seems like a great enemies to lovers story.
