As we come to the end of spring and gear up for a “summer” of sorts, reading becomes all the more important with various events being cancelled or postponed. Here is our run-down of the books coming out this month that have caught our attention:
Title: The Guest List
Author: Lucy Foley
Genre: Mystery; Thriller
Our thoughts: This was compared to the work of Agatha Christie – fingers crossed it’s good!
A destination wedding becomes a murder mystery party in this atmospheric thriller set off the coast of Ireland. Picture it: petty jealousies, drunk groomsmen, ruined bridesmaid dress, and a dead body. This is definitely going to be a fun read!
Title: The Vanishing Half
Author: Brit Bennett
Genre: Historical; Contemporary
Our thoughts: This seems like a thought provoking read that covers sensitive issues such as race and trauma.
In this book, the fates of two identical twins intertwine as their daughters cross paths. This novel spans multiple generations to explore how issues of race and past trauma shape the very foundation of our lives.
Title: The Court of Miracles
Author: Kester Grant
Genre: Fantasy; Young Adult
Our thoughts: Having loved Six of Crows this seems like a promising read!
Set in an alternate 1828 Paris, a young thief goes head to head with leaders of underground criminal guilds to protect her naïve adopted sister. Colour me intrigued!
Title: Mexican Gothic
Author: Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Genre: Historical; Horror
Our thoughts: With a cover like that you don’t even need a good storyline!
The glamorous debutante Noemi heads to an isolated mansion in the Mexican countryside after receiving a frantic letter from her cousin. She soon unearths stories of violence and madness which are both terrifying and seductive. Bring on the gothic craziness!
Title: The Last Train to Key West
Author: Chanel Cleeton
Genre: Historical; Romance
Our thoughts: Love a book with a strong female characters – looking forward to this!
Three women fight against the odds to navigate life and new territories. As their lives cross unexpectedly, it will be exciting to see how these women cope with the danger surrounding them.
Title: Death in Her Hands
Author: Ottessa Moshfegh
Genre: Mystery
Our thoughts: Creepy woods plus dead body equals classic mystery storyline – love, love, love the promise of suspense.
A walk in the woods takes a disturbing turn. With a blurb like that it will be interesting to see how the author develops the plot and makes it unique.
