Cover:

This fun green design does a great job presenting the golf theme of the story. It is also eye-catching and cute, perfect for contemporary romance.

Writing:

4/5

The casual writing style is filled with great descriptions, making this an easy and entertaining read. I also loved the dual points of view, as this made the story very satisfying.

It’s not always about the next thing you do. Sometimes it’s about what you’ve already done.

Storyline:

4/5

A cute romance, which relies on the grumpy/ sunshine and forced proximity tropes, unfolds between self-destructive golfer Wells Whitaker and his loyal fangirl Josephine Doyle as they spend time together. Besides this, the struggles of both characters (careers, abandonment and type 1 diabetes) add some complexity to the storyline. However, I struggled to find the sex scenes and drawn-out angst in the second half of the story engaging, so my attention eventually waned.

Main character(s):

4/5

Wells and Josephine are complete opposites, with distinct personalities and struggles that made them realistic and easy to root for. I especially loved how their passion for golf was presented, along with Josephine’s strength and independence. It was also heartwarming how Wells gradually opened up and was shown to be a sweet, thoughtful guy.

she was strong because of her struggle not in spite of it.

Secondary characters:

2/5

A handful of secondary characters help support the main characters and drive aspects of the story. However, the little focus and minor roles given to these characters meant I did not find them memorable.

Romance:

3/5

The chemistry between the main characters was evident from the start, and I could not get enough of their teasing and banter. While I was also quickly won over by the cute ways they supported and interacted with each other, their connection progressed too quickly, and I was unconvinced by the dramatic emotions they suddenly felt for each other.

love should always be celebrated

Narration & Audio:

4/5

Callie Dalton naturally conveys the wit and emotions of the narrative, neatly bringing the characters to life. My only nitpick is that her vocal inflexions during some of the conversations between the main characters made me cringe and took me out of the story.

In essence, ‘Fangirl Down’ is a cute sports romance with lots of chemistry and witty characters, although the second half dragged a little. Another cute grumpy/sunshine romance to check out if you enjoyed this one is Wrapped with a Beau by Lillie Vale.
