what you say to yourself matters a whole lot more than you might think

The opening chapters do a great job of defining the central message of this book: aligning our minds with the truth of who God says we are. From there, six powerful mindsets are explored, complete with action steps, personal stories from Pastor Furtick’s life, biblical insights and practical tools, that make the content accessible and applicable to everyday life. The content is also presented in a clear, conversational style that is both empowering and encouraging. However, like many books in the self-help genre, it does contain some repetition for emphasis, but I have always found this unappealing.

The point is constant progress, not instant perfection.

The audiobook, narrated by Furtick himself, was fantastic. Furtick’s dynamic and passionate delivery kept me engaged from start to finish. I also loved the bonus content, which provided extra tools that are worth revisiting.

Discussion Questions (Contains spoilers!):

Q: Which of the six mindsets stood out most to you?

Number three: With God, there is always a way, and by faith, I will find it. This mindset deeply resonated with me because I often struggle with feelings of defeat when things get hard or uncertain. However, Furtick’s words encouraged me to remain open to the opportunities God presents in those moments. I need to stop relying solely on my strength, become more resilient and embrace new possibilities by faith—even if that means making mistakes.

Q: What limitations have you been holding onto that God might be calling you to challenge?

I don’t see myself as articulate, commanding or particularly mature—traits I associate with good leaders and public speakers. Because of this, I often hesitate or shy away from opportunities that involve leading or sharing my voice. I’m gradually learning not to let this control my decisions—especially when I sense God nudging me toward something. Lack of time is another excuse I often use to turn down opportunities; my life already feels busy, and adding anything new for some time can seem overwhelming. However, I’ve often discovered that I can juggle more than I initially believed and usually enjoy the extra commitments.

Q: Are you open or closed to new opportunities that come your way?

I think I’m fairly open to new opportunities. While I may not jump at every chance right away, I take time to consider and pray about them. When something feels right—even if it pushes me out of my comfort zone and I might initially grumble about it—I’m usually willing to dive in.

Q: Do you have any similar book recommendations?

While nothing immediately comes to mind that mirrors this book’s message, I’ve heard that Noah Asher has a style similar to Furtick’s. His book ‘Chaos: Overcoming the Overwhelming’ might be worth checking out.

Q: Has a fear of failure or embarrassment ever held you back?

Q: Do you ever struggle to believe what God says about your identity?

Q: What would you say your strengths are?

Q: Do you use any of the tools or practices from this book?
