I seem to be one of the few readers unimpressed by this fantasy “masterpiece”. Perhaps my taste in fantasy books is not mature or profound enough for such an elaborate tale. Or, perhaps I am merely disinterested in fantasy books that read like a convoluted autobiography and have no clear storyline.

THE FLATSHARE by Beth O’Leary
What I was expecting: A light-hearted, funny read to infuse my veins with a shot of cuteness.
What I got: A deep exploration of overcoming mental and emotional abuse with sprinkles of humour and cuteness.
Did I like it anyway? Yes, but it took me a while to get into…

A THRONE OF SWANS by Katherine & Elizabeth Corr
It is very rare for me to be undecided in the rating I want to give a book right after I finish reading it. Yet, here I am, confused because I was not fully enthralled by the contents of this book, but I still found myself constantly drawn to it by something I can not put my finger on.

A GOOD GIRL’S GUIDE TO MURDER by Holly Jackson
Truth be told, the premise of a teenager resolving a five-year-old murder did not elicit much excitement from me. I expected ‘A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder’ to be unrealistic, predictable and chock-full of cliques. However, this book surprised me by smashing its way through my low expectations to a spot as one of my favourite reads this year.

CHAIN OF IRON by Cassandra Clare
‘Chain of Iron’ was one of my most anticipated books of 2021. Before reading it, I had absolutely no doubt that this book would be anything less than spectacular. Not once did it cross my mind that I may end up bored or disinterested given how much I loved the first book of this series. My only concern was whether I would be able to tolerate the emotional anguish I knew Cassandra Clare would dole out.

THE MURDER ON THE LINKS by Agatha Christie
Attention ladies and gents! It is my utter pleasure to detail my thoughts on this impressive novel called ‘The Murder on the links’. This mystery masterpiece, written by the Queen of Crime herself, is clearly well thought out and skillfully executed.

THE GILDED ONES by Namina Forna
As someone who is utterly shameless about her love for books with pretty covers, I must first mention that this book looks beautiful! The melanin POPPING on the cover plus the gold accents and the green edges have me completely mesmerised. To make things even better, this book proves to be far more than a pretty cover as it delivers great content.

SERPENT & DOVE by Shelby Mahurin
‘Serpent & Dove’ captured my interest right from the start! There is no gradual introduction to the characters and world as the book quickly launches into some action. While this could be disorienting for some readers, I was fully enthralled by the amazing writing and fast pace within a few pages. Additionally, I swiftly became infatuated with the awesome character that is Louise le Blanc.
