Writing:
5/5
The detailed writing brings each story within this book to life. Even with the heavy topics mentioned, the narrative remained entertaining as a light-hearted and casual tone was maintained throughout. While the narrative is also slightly disjointed, the additional information provided by numerous tangents made this book more elaborate and compelling.
We spend so much time being afraid of failure, afraid of rejection. But regret is the thing we should fear most.

Through a collection of fascinating and comical stories, Trevor Noah recounts his childhood in South Africa. Beginning with his forbidden birth, we see how Trevor’s parents and issues, such as racism, segregation and domestic abuse, shaped him into the man he is today. Not only is each story recounted in vivid detail, but Trevor’s emotional state is also provided, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in the narrative. Even the constant reflections and insights are interesting as they challenge readers to be more inclusive and understanding.
Life is full of pain. Let the pain sharpen you, but don’t hold on to it. Don’t be bitter.
Narration:
5/5
It was such a delight having Trevor narrate these stories himself! His voice, with different dialects and tones, is brilliantly used to enhance the listening experience.
In short, ‘Born A Crime‘ is both a heart-warming and amusing read. Trevor’s compelling journey is enriched by the rich writing style and narration. His thought-provoking insights (and his love of fantasy books!) also made me love and respect him even more. Definitely check out This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay if you liked this book.
