The lush writing style flows beautifully with rich analogies and witty humour. I especially loved the Afro-Caribbean and pop culture references, which made the narrative engaging and fun. Besides this, natural, well-written dialogues help propel the storyline forward and define the characters.

FIVE SURVIVE by Holly Jackson

Although the story is told from Red’s point of view, the picturesque, third-person narrative made me feel like I was right there experiencing the chaos that unfolds with the characters. THE MERCILESS ONES by Namina Forna

Namina tremendously expands the rich, brutal world of Otera with impressive mythology, creatures and powers. The considerable information needed for this was gradually introduced in bite-sized pieces throughout the story, so it never felt overwhelming.

The vibrant colours and gorgeous illustrations are hard to fault! I love the stunning portrayal of Briseis as she rocks her natural hair and glasses with confidence. The design also has strong connections to the story, giving a glimpse of what the book is about.
